Southwestern trip, 1961

In the summer of 1961, I was fortunate to travel for eight weeks with long-time (and continuing) friend Andy Newman throughout the western US.  We traveled and lived in the Newman family VW camper, which was a real novelty at that time, and our visit to some remote areas was guided by mentors from our schools in St. Louis: Fred Eiseman and Hillis Howie. The photos posted here document a few of our experiences, and they certainly represent the “seed” of my interest in geology, the natural world, and photography. The photo at lower right was taken of me, by Andy, at the Four Corners monument (Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona). Today it is quite a bit more developed!
