Featured photo, Spring 2025: The sinking of the SS United States

The SS United States was towed from its “home’ in Philadelphia  on February 19, 2025.  The departure was witnessed by thousands at viewpoints along the Delaware River and Bay.   Here we see the ship getting a “sendoff” from a flock of geese, with the Commodore Barry Bridge in the background.

The departure was a solemn occasion, as the ship had been in Philly for 30 years and there had been many attempts to save it from the fate it now faces…. to be sunk as an “artificial” reef off the Florida Panhandle.  To lose a ship with this name, removed from the birthplace of the nation one month after January 20, was indeed a very sad occasion.

Other photos of the ship, taken from a park in Essington, PA, are found in the “Human Spirit ” section of this website.
